Mothering: Love and Loss
The Rev. Gail Seavey

All parents quickly learn that the more we love, the more we have to lose, but women’s biology requires they face losses such as miscarriages, still births, adoptions, and deaths of their children as a loss of part of themselves. In some cultures, women have acknowledged this by honoring Goddesses of birth and death such as Kali, Asherah and Eostre. Today we will honor mothers that have loved and lost.

The Ethics of Human Biological Enhancement
Michael Bess
Michael Bess, Professor of History at Vanderbilt University, will explore the ethical and social implications of new technologies for human biological enhancement. The world is currently in the early stages of an epochal shift as we apply our technological ingenuity to the challenge of redesigning our bodies--our physical and mental capabilities. What will be the consequences for the human species of this transformation? What sort of world will our great-grandchildren live in--and what will they look like?
