Adult Religious Education

Adult Religious Education typically happens on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. during the school year. Childcare is also available from 6:00 to 9:00 PM each Wednesday. Classes vary widely, from week to week and month to month. Some are part of a series and some are single classes. In the past we have had classes on meditation, mythology, paganism and so on. The most regular series, which happens several times a year, is the "New UU Class."

Current Class Offerings

Adult RE: Reading Sacred Texts

Something calls us forward. We search our hearts and minds and the world around us hoping to discover why we are here, who we are, and what our connection is to the mystery beyond our knowing. (more…)

Adult RE: A Course in Miracles

Thursday evenings in the Meditation Room, 7- 8:30 p.m. A Course in Miracles is a spiritual path whose foundation is forgiveness - overlooking in another what never really happened. As we practice forgiveness, we experience the world as a classroom and learn that we are not separate from God, that our guilt and fears are baseless. In this class, led by Jerry Rossman, we will focus on text readings and workbook lessons; we will discuss their practical application in life and share our insights and miracles as a result of studying this Wisdom. All materials will be provided. Newcomers are welcome; each class is open and self-contained, so previous attendance is not necessary. Child care is available. For further information, please call Jerry @ 662-6277 or write to selden1942@aol.com.

Youth Advisor Training Offered in May

What is the secret of working with youth? There isn’t one. All it takes is a genuine interest, a willingness to learn from those younger than you, and the occasional ability to be determinedly silly, while still remembering that you are the adult. Oh, and you should also believe that our youth can change the world!
If that’s you—or if it might be—please attend the youth advisor training that will be offered on Wednesday evenings, 7-8:30 p.m., May 7 and 14. It’s best to attend both sessions. Attendance does not mean that you are committing to becoming a youth advisor, but it is an opportunity to discern if working with our youth is where your gifts lie.
The sessions will be conducted by youth ministry coordinator Scott Weaver and some of our youth. Please contact Scott at sweaver@firstuunashville.org if you have questions or if you would like to sign up. It will be FUUN!

Mission Statement

The Unitarian Universalist covenant commits us to encourage each other in spiritual growth and to promote a free and responsible search for truth and meaning. The Adult Religious Education Committee of First UU Nashville exists to fulfill that part of our covenant.

We are powerful when we are educated. The ARE committee of First UU Nashville will offer classes and discussions to promote growth in body, mind, and spirit. These will be in harmony with UU principles and will encourage a safe exchange of ideas. Our goal is for the members of our congregation to be better as individuals and more committed to living our faith and improving the world.

It is also the task of the ARE committee to promote the growth of First UU Nashville in particular and the UU religion in general. To this end, the committee will welcome anyone from outside our congregation who wishes to participate in our goals and will maintain contacts with sympathetic organizations in the community.
